Many of you may have spotted one of my favourite topics is that of bears. Black bears and particularly brown bears are an excellent indicator as to the state of the natural environment. They sit at the top of the food chain and need a healthy and diverse habitat to survive. The Yellowstone bear population has been very successful in making a comeback from near extinction around 30 years ago and so the species may be removed from the endangered list very soon. Did you know that a cross Polar bear and Grizzly bear was shot in the Canadian arctic in 2006. Also named the pizzly bear, grolar bear and prizzly bear it is thought the bears may be responding to climate change by cross breeding? A scary thought in many ways.
