So from the John Muir Trail or Tuolumne meadows I went to the following towns and resorts to either resupply or pick up a food box. I have marked the ones I sent a food parcel with a P.
Remember all my food was posted down the line by myself. (excluding the Kennedy meadows box....thanks Dat)
South Lake Tahoe / Bridgeport / Sierra City P / Chester / Burney (the town) / Seiad Valley P / Ashland / Mazama village P / Shelter Cove P / Sisters via 2nd pass / Timberline lodge P / Cascade locks P / Trout lake P / Packwood / Snowqualamie / Skykomish P / Stehekin P
If I hiked again I would repeat all the above mail drops....which worked well. Also Snowqualamie was a pretty poor selection (I eat well on the trail) and expensive so I would send a box there.
I missed Etna which was a bad idea. It is a cool place apparently.
If you want to buy lots of food and mail off ahead from the trail I suggest you choose from South Lake Tahoe / Bridgeport / Ashland / Sisters as these have biggish stores with good selections
Quite often you mail yourself too much food......This is so much better than not enough..fill your boots!
So quickly what do I buy to stay alive.....porridge, honey, peanut butter, bread (tortillas, muffins or bagels) crisps (chips for Americans!), cheese, ham or other meat, foil tuna (in packets), trail bars, choc bars (snickers, etc), dried fruit, nuts, sweets
These are the mainstays of my food carries.....I don't mail all the above though
Do not ration food or try and eat cheap...it may destroy your moral and possibly make the whole experience a misery! Towards the end I was almost always hungry....I simply couldn't carry enough food to stay full....
Lastly, do not worry about resupply on the PCT......it's not as bad as some people make out.
