Just found this interesting article that lists all fatalities for the past years. Probably the most famous 'recent' incident is that of Timothy Treadwell in Alaska. Although not appreciated by everyone this keen amateur naturalist did a lot for publicising his encounters with bears.

One interesting point is that since this incident in 1993 there have actually been more fatalities with black bears rather than browns (grizzly bears). 10 to black bears and 7 to brown. Ofcourse one bear fatality is one too many. Maybe this is due to more bear to human encounters and black bears often hanging around humans more often.

On the PCT last year I went through a place where apparently a large black bear had apparently gone through the side door of a cabin in order to get at the kitchen. It was found to be gorging on a massive tub of ice cream when the manager got back. I don't know if this was Ben & Gerrys!

This must have been a shock to see when opening the blinds one morning

Bears don't like flying (damage caused by a land lubber grizz)
