Along the Pacific Crest Trail there are trail registers that hikers can write comments in. Sometimes they are next to water caches, food caches or just at a specific point like the start or end of a section. I quite like putting in a few comments and I think most people do. Now to the point of this article. At the end of the PCT there was a register concealed in the monument. It took me a while to work this one out that you had to lift the obelisks lid off. (see pic). Well, I never was any good at those wooden puzzles.
Now just imagine this situation. You have completed a 2650 mile hike across America having one totally mind bending adventure probably giving you a taste of your toughest and most enjoyable days ever. What would you write? Just a few lines to finish off this monumental day.
I read through them and I have to say there were some really poignant comments and some very amusing ones too. Fortunately I wrote down some of my favourite ones to share with you. It would be a shame if they just get stuck on a bookcase somewhere. If you recognise one of your comments, I'm sorry I didn't ask permission and of course I can remove it if you wish. I wonder what happens to all the old journals? Would make a great book. Incidentally the more I read my own last line the more I dislike it. Oh well....hope you enjoy them..... there are some right corkers
My line first then the others in the next post
Dryfoot (my trail name)
Fantastic trail from start to end, testing my mind, body and soul in ways that I did not expect. I have been fortunate to meet great people, experience generosity and kindness whilst seeing a wonderful country ‘the USA’
If you are like me you may want to ask yourself
1/ what did I learn on this trail? About me and about others?
2/ what will I do different in the future?
3/ what comes next?
And just as a taster for what follows another comment
