Well if you live in the UK like me, probably not.  Although big cat sightings in the UK do happen and remain a mystery to this day.

A mountain lion also known as a puma or cougar is often the primary predator unless it lives within the realm of the large brown or grizzly bear. It is known to have healthy populations along much of the Western United States.

Last November I hiked through a place in New Mexico called Pinos Altos situated a few miles north of a larger town called Silver City. In June of last year a man was attacked and partially consumed by a lion that was eventually trapped and killed by the forest service. In the end they also killed another cat in the same area. Although attacks like this are rare there have been a surprising amount of encounters over the years. I have found an interesting list of confirmed cougar attacks.

Gila National Forest New Mexico - Cat territory

A few hikers that I met along the way had seen lions along the trail. Also many of the hunters that I met gave me numerous stories about the normally elusive big cat.

Current advice is to avoid running along the trail and not hike in the dark. A big cat is more likely to attack if its chase mechanism is stimulated or if it sees you as easy prey.
